For registered Startup Weekend Chandler participants, we have an extra event in the afternoon to get you prepared for the next 54-hours. Startup 101 will cover team building, formulating your product idea and working through version 1 once you have a team put together. Our speakers have a wealth of ‘been there, done that’ knowledge that will help you avoid their mistakes.

The event will take place at the Downtown Chandler Public Library (22 South Delaware Street, Chandler, 85225) on the second floor, in the old council chambers.

Agenda
1:30-1:55pm Registration/Check-in
2:00-2:45pm Team
2:45-3:45pm Product
3:45-5:00pm Execution

Team
A team should be made up of people with different skills and experiences. A team should not be all developers or all idea people. You need someone to plan, someone to execute, and someone to sell. Team members can take on multiple roles, but all critical roles should be represented. This panel will discuss what a team should look like in the context of multiple business models.

What does a team look like?

Responsibilities

Conflict Resolution

Our speakers are Derek Neighbors and Jade Meskill, co-founders of Gangplank and owners of Integrum Technologies, an Agile consulting company based out of Gangplank.

Product
Your vision may be amazing, but when you get real about it, it may not be reasonable for a 60-day launch. This section focuses on how to define your product for the highest possibility for success and deliver the highest value in your first release.

Market Research and Competitor Evaluation

Creating the simplest effective product

Our speakers are Angelo Coppola, Vice President of Marketing for Axosoft and AZ Disruptors team member, as well as the developers behind the web service API Twilio Cloud Communications.
Execution
Ideas are worth nothing without execution. How you execute is the difference between success and failure more than anything else. In this section we will explore best practices in focusing your energy on the highest yielding activities.

Decision making: How do you decide what to do when you encounter a fork in the road?

Version 1: You can’t have every bell and whistle. Learn to evaluate what you need to launch, versus what can come later.

Last 10%: Your first release won’t be a polished gem. In this phase, you must set the foundations for growth.

Our featured speaker is Kathy Sacks, Vice President of Communications for Infusionsoft. Also speaking is Steve Swedler of Simple Seating.

Startup Weekend’s are all about experiential learning. That means no sitting back and watching – it’s all hands-on.

Startup Weekend’s are all about experiential learning. That means no sitting back and watching – it’s all hands-on. Everyone from the team members, mentors and even the spectators is an integral part of making the weekend a success.

So where do you fit in?

Participants
An idea will only get you so far – you need a quality team to make your product a reality. At Startup Weekend Chandler, each team is composed of technical and non-technical participants.

Tickets are $75 through May 25th and include 7 meals and unlimited energy drinks and snacks.

Technical
If you’re a designer sick of churning out logos and business cards, or perhaps a developer feeling like a code monkey plugging away at someone else’s passion project, Startup Weekend is an opportunity to break out of the rut. The technical participants provide the look and feel for an idea over the 54-hours. Not only can get work on a project that really challenges your skills, but also builds your network of other technical guru’s that will come in handy in your future side project work.

Non-Technical
The path from idea and product involves knowing your audience and being able to sell your idea to others. Participants with experience in business, marketing/PR and product development are invaluable assets for a team looking to build a viable startup. Non-technical attendees work with beta-testers, meet with mentors and provide feedback to the team throughout the weekend.

Spectators
There’s a special kind of energy surrounding Startup Weekend events – who wouldn’t want to be a part of it? If you have other commitments that prevent you from being involved for the full weekend, a spectator ticket is the next best thing. As a spectator, you’ll have complete access to the teams to follow their progress as well as participate as a beta-tester. The teams will need a great deal of feedback to make sure they’re on the right track and spectators will be extremely valuable.

Tickets are $30 for one day or $50 for the weekend. The ticket price includes 2 meals.

Startup Weekend has always been a fantastic event that identifies and unifies the local startup community. People from different skill backgrounds join together to work on cool projects.

The goal of Startup Weekend Chandler is to build on this success, taking it to next level. We’ve made some changes to the agenda, as well as added pre- and post-events to address your hesitations and maximize your Startup Weekend experience.

Pre-Events
When it comes to startups, education and preparation is key. Our first pre-event, Startup Weekend Welcome & Overview, will cover expectations and agenda for the event, as well as some startup basics and flushing out of ideas.

For the first time, we are encouraging teams to form before the weekend. Participants can still build a team at the start of the event, but for those that already have a group they’d like to work with or want to get a head start, we are offering Speed Team Networking. Registered participants will be connected with ideas, then discuss whether their skill sets and personality are a match.

Also unique to Startup Weekend Chandler is the Startup 101 workshop. The workshop takes place the Friday of Startup Weekend. This intensive 3-hour workshop provides the basics of building a business, from choosing a team to market research and completing Version 1.0 of your product. This event is available to registered participants.

The Weekend
As for the weekend, WE WON’T STOP! Gangplank is a 24/7 facility, which means teams never have to leave. The space will be open the ENTIRE 54-HOURS! Who needs to sleep when you’re building a business?

We will have more mentors available for longer time periods in areas ranging from design, development, management, team building and idea validation. Also, local startups will be on hand to share their experience.

In addition to more mentors, Startup Weekend Chandler has opened up tickets to spectators, who will provide teams with opportunities to test their product with users and receive feedback.

Road Map to Launch
At the end of the weekend, during product presentations, companies will state whether they will be participating in the ‘Roadmap to Launch’ challenge, culminating in Launch Weekend in August 2011. This continuation of Startup Weekend Chandler will help you navigate the next steps of starting a business over 60-days, culminating in a pitch night to major Angel and VC groups across Arizona. The post-events include one-on-one mentoring, user testing events, and social activities to meet and mingle with successful entrepreneurs.

Startup Weekend Chandler is not an end product. The goal is not just to start, but finish. A team can build a great product or service over 54-hours, but it is what after the weekend that is most crucial. The changes we are implementing will prepare participants for the road ahead and set them up for success.

Startup Weekends are 54-hour events where developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startups!

Startup Weekends are weekend-long, hands-on experiences where entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if startup ideas are viable. On average, half of Startup Weekend’s attendees have technical backgrounds, the other half have business backgrounds.

Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees are encouraged to bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday teams design and develop business plans while constantly streamlining their startup vision. On Sunday evening teams demo their prototypes, listen to judges’ feedback and in some cities, win prizes.

Startup Weekends are specifically designed for entrepreneurs interested in receiving feedback on an idea, looking for a co-founder, or who want to learn a new skill. We also welcome anyone looking to test the entrepreneurial waters. Startup Weekends are risk-free environments where everyone is expected to roll up their sleeves and dive into the exhilarating world of startups.
